Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a Target Group 1 applicant or a Target Group 2 applicant?
You can find all information about the Target Groups here.
Can I send my documents in another language than English?
It is essential that you provide an official English translation of all the official documents you submit, such as diplomas and transcripts. First, the documents need to be translated by a registered translator. Next, the translation must be certified by the educational institution that issued the original documents or by the local diplomatic office of the host country. Passports do not have to be translated!
I haven’t obtained my degree yet and therefore cannot send a diploma of my current studies. What should I do?
If you have not finished your studies at the time of application, we strongly advise you to add intermediate transcripts to your application. Please note that the final transcripts will have to be submitted upon enrolment.
I have the South African nationality and I hold a university degree from an institution in South Africa, but I have lived in Europe for some time. Can I obtain a scholarship to study in Europe?
Yes you can, provided that over the last five years you have not carried out your main activity (such as styding or working) in Europe for more than 12 months. This means that, if for instance you have worked in Belgium for 6 months and in France for 7 months, you cannot apply for an ema2sa scholarship because the total duration of your stay in Europe is 13 months.
I am a South African student studying at one of the South African partner universities. Can I apply for a scholarship to go on an exchange to one of the other South African partner institutions?
No, you cannot apply to study in your own country. Ema2sa wishes to bring South African students to Europe.
Can I use the ema2sa scholarship to study at a European university that is not a partner?
No, you cannot. You can only apply for a scholarship to study at one of the European partner universities.
Can I apply for more than one programme?
Yes, you can. It is possible to apply for a maximum of 2 programmes at 2 different European partner universities. Please note that you can only apply for one programme per university. This implies that your second choice has to be a programme from another university than your first choice.
Can I apply for a programme that is not in the list of available study fields?
No, you cannot. You have to choose from the programmes and positions that are listed in the overview.
What language requirements do I have to fulfill?
In the database with the academic offer you can find detailed information on the study opportunities, including the language in which the courses are taught . If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send an email to the ema2sa team at the host university that offers the programme you consider to apply for.
What about housing at the host university?
According to the rules of the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 programme, the host universities are required to assist students and staff members to find suitable housing on or near campus.
Can my family join me during my studies in Europe?
We don’t recommend it, but it is possible. The ema2sa team at the host university will give you the necessary information on visa application, residence permit etc.
Are the European partner universities located in safe cities?
The partner universities are located in countries with a remarkably low crime rate.
